Redevelopment commences at mansion care home

BTP and MP Brothers have now started a major redevelopment of The Home of Compassion Care Home in Surrey, upgrading the original Grade II listed mansion and adding to it, creating a state-of-the-art 79 bed care home.

The Home of Compassion, a Grade II listed mansion by the river in Thames Ditton, was originally built by the Honourable Charlotte Boyle Walsingham in 1786. BTP and MP Brothers have now been appointed to carry out a major redevelopment of the site, upgrading existing buildings and adding new builds to create a state-of-the-art 79 bed care home.

This care home, the latest in a series from BTP client Caring Homes, comprises several buildings, all of which are being developed as part of the overall project. The Main House will provide a range of facilities and accommodation for 12 full-time residents, whilst the new East Wing will incorporate a further 43 beds. The Chapel and Priory will provide accommodation for 24 residents, and will include additional staff sleeping facilities.

All three elements of the project present their own challenges. The external façades of the Chapel and Priory are to be retained, and the construction of an additional floor is to be incorporated.

The Main House is Grade II listed and the team have been liaising with English Heritage and the Local Authority in order to restore the building to its former glory. In keeping with the listed status of the property, original features and traditional methods of construction are being employed.

The East Wing is a new three storey extension which will be linked to the Main House.

Extensive grounds surround the buildings. Landscape gardening has been carefully planned and designed to cater for the resident’s needs, with special attention given to those with dementia.

Contractors started on site at the beginning of last month, and the multi-million pound project is scheduled for completion in early 2016.
