Permitted Development Government Press Release- could this be good news for you?
Wednesday 21st October, 2015
A press release from the Government on 12 October states the Permitted Development rights to convert offices (B1(a)) into residential homes (C3) will now be made permanent, thus relieving the pressure for projects to be completed by May 2016. The twofold benefit of this is that the pressure to complete current projects by May 2016 is relieved, but also that many who have been awaiting this announcement might decide to proceed with potential projects now.
BTP Director, Justin Bird believes that this is an important step for the government in securing its residential unit quotas and more importantly an important and panic reducing measure for developers. He says,
“Whilst BTP has been working on many developments with an aim to securing completion prior to the original May 2016 completion date, this change will allow all parties to take a more holistic view of the full potential of the property.”
The Government’s commitment to delivering increased housing stock have also highlighted other interesting forthcoming changes in development regulations. On 13th October 2015, Housing and Planning Minister Brandon Lewis has stated that rights will be further extended to allow conversion of light use industrial buildings and launderettes to residential housing.
In addition, the permitted development rights will include the demolition of office buildings for residential new builds.
If you are considering projects, please contact us, BTP Group has extensive experience in conversions and would be happy to discuss your needs and concerns.
